ARTH 3443 - 17th Century Dutch and Flemish Art

Prerequisite(s): ARTH 1700 with a “C-” or better or permission of department

Description: This course focuses on the art produced in the Netherlands (present day Belgium and Holland) in the 17^th century. Students engage in a larger investigation of Netherlandish visual culture through examining the work of artists such as Rubens, Rembrandt, and Vermeer. Topics include the relationship of visual images to the notions of knowledge and science, to political and religious ideals and institutions, to evolving notions of privacy, domesticity, and subjectivity, and to the expanding capital-based wealth of Northern Europe. Students consider current scholarly debates regarding “realism” and the interpretation of Dutch and Flemish pictures.
