Early Childhood Education Licensure:
The Early Childhood Licensure Program prepares candidates to teach preschool through grade three. Through the sequence of courses and field experiences, the candidate satisfies all of Colorado’s academic standards for licensure in Early Childhood Education. Candidates are prepared by an emphasis on child development of all kinds: physical, cognitive, social, and emotional, to instruct children in preschool, and kindergarten through third grade.
Candidates who wish to obtain Colorado Licensure in Early Childhood Education must earn a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in an approved content major. The following major advising guides are prepared to assist candidates in choosing an appropriate major for Early Childhood Education. Candidates must choose a major from the following selections in order to fulfill licensure requirements for MSU Denver and the State of Colorado. The advising guides are not substitutes for meeting with academic advisors. Licensure candidates must consult an advisor in their selected major as well as one in Teacher Education. To better support candidates in their major selections, eight-semester planned sequences for each of the licensure majors can be obtained inside the Teacher Application Center in West Classroom, Room 136.
Degree-seeking Early Childhood Education Licensure candidates must choose from one of the following majors to earn licensure in Early Childhood Education:
English
Human Development (recommended)
History
Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences (Childhood Communication Concentration)
Early Childhood Education Licensure Candidates
Candidates seeking teacher licensure must also gain admission to the Teacher Education Program. The application form for the program must be completed by attending an Application Meeting scheduled every semester by the Teacher Application Center (WC 136). Formal admission must be obtained BEFORE Level II education coursework can be taken. Refer to the Provisional and Formal Admission section of this catalog for more information about the necessary process. General Studies for Early Childhood Education Licensure:
The following general studies fulfill the general course requirements for MSU Denver and the Teacher Education Program for degree-seeking candidates. The following general studies or equivalent courses are required for teacher licensure for degree-seeking candidates. Post-baccalaureate candidates may need to fulfill some general studies requirements; therefore, they should contact an advisor in Early Childhood Education to verify the courses required for licensure. The following courses fulfill the required courses for state licensure in Early Childhood Education as well as the minor required for the degree. English Major with Early Childhood Licensure:
The English Major includes additional preparation in literature and composition. The core curriculum is designed to ensure that the program meets Colorado Model Content Standards. English is a major which will address the literacy standards by providing the candidate with additional preparation in language and literacy. The program provides candidates with a strong foundation in literature and literary genres; a solid perspective on the English language, including its history, structure, and development; and both theory and practice in composition, language arts, communication, and teaching methodology. The candidates will also be prepared to teach literature of various cultures, accommodate cultural and ethnic diversity in language and writing, and communicate effectively with a diverse population of candidates. General Studies Exception for English Major:
Candidates majoring in English take ENG 3461 Children’s Literature: Theory and Practice. Therefore, English majors do not take ENG 2460 Children’s Literature listed under the General Studies guide for Early Childhood Education. Instead, English majors must choose an additional Arts and Humanities course to fulfill the General Studies requirements for MSU Denver. History Major with Early Childhood Licensure:
The core curriculum is designed to ensure that the program meets Colorado Endorsement Standards. The curriculum is designed to prepare candidates to teach to the Colorado Model Content Standards for Early Childhood Education. The core courses in the major provide the candidate with the knowledge-base to understand contemporary societal issues while drawing on experiences from the past. History Major, General Concentration

In addition to the required courses (15 hours), students also need to take at least three courses (9 hours) from Category I, at least two courses (6 hours) from Catagory II, and at least four history elective courses (12 hours). History Electives: (select at least four courses)
Elective courses may be selected from among any of the HIS prefix courses offered by the History Department. If HIS 1040 World History since 1500 is not taken as part of the core, students must include among their history electives a course covering an area outside the United States and Europe. It is highly recommended that students seeking teaching licensure in Early Childhood Education take HIS 1110 Colorado History I as one of their electives. Totals

General Studies Exception for History Major with Early Childhood Licensure:
HIS 1210 satisfies the General Studies Historical requirement. Human Development Major with Early Childhood Licensure:
Human Development is the recommended major for Early Childhood candidates. This interdisciplinary major in human development will provide students with a focus on the entire life span and in-depth knowledge about theory, research, and application in human development. Students will participate in field experiences to make connections between theory, research, and practice. The core curriculum of Human Development is designed to prepare candidates to pass the licensure content exam and to teach to the Colorado Model Content Standards for Early Childhood Education. Speech Communications Major with Early Childhood Licensure
Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences Concentration
An emphasis in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences prepares Early Childhood candidates to teach to the Colorado Model Content standards and provides a sound background for candidates pursuing careers in education, health care, and vocational rehabilitation. Graduates in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences will have prerequisite coursework to pursue a master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology, which opens up possible careers in schools, community clinics, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and practice. Option A: For students planning to seek a graduate degree in speech-language pathology or audiology:

SPE 1010 Public Speaking is a prerequisite to SLHS 2530, SLHS 3600 and SPE 3760. BIO 1080 General Biology I and 1090 General Biology Laboratory I are prerequisites for BIO 2310. These courses are required for this major and may be used to fulfill General Studies requirements.
Students planning to seek certification from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association should take MTH 1210 Introduction to Statistics or PSY 2310 Introduction to Statistics, PSY 2210 Psychology of Human Development, and PHY 1000 Introduction to Physics or PHY 3620 Physics of Sound and Music.
