CHE 4971 - Effective College Teaching in Chemistry I
Credits: 0.5
Corequisite(s): CHE 0010
Description: This course is the first of a two-semester sequence that introduces teaching assistants (TAs) to core theoretical frameworks of learning and the scientific evidence that can inform their teaching. In collaboration with instructional faculty - both a course instructor and their faculty mentor for courses to which they are assigned - students, across two semesters, gain a foundation in learning theory and develop a set of skills and tools that are widely valued to them as professionals in any career in which they train, supervise, or teach others.
The first semester of this course is focused on the nature of science, navigating the chemistry laboratory, strategies for effective teaching, and introduction to aspects of evidence-based course design.
Class time is used to discuss case studies, video examples of enacted teaching practices in lecture, lab, and online scenarios, peer-review implementation plans and teaching demonstrations.
Note: Students must be participating in the American Chemical Society Post-Baccalaureate Bridge Program (ACS-BP) to enroll in this course.
