CHE 4971 - Effective College Teaching in Chemistry I

Credits: 0.5

Corequisite(s): CHE 0010

Description: This is the first of a two-semester course sequence introducing teaching assistants (TAs) to core theoretical frameworks of learning and the scientific evidence that can inform their teaching. In collaboration with their course instructor and Tier 2 mentor, students gain a foundation in learning theory and develop widely valuable skills and tools for a professional in any career that includes training, supervising, or teaching others.

In the first semester, students focus on the nature of science, navigating the chemistry laboratory, strategies for effective teaching, and introductory aspects of evidence-based course design. Class time is used to discuss case studies, examples of enacted teaching practices in lecture, lab, and online scenarios, peer-review implementation plans and teaching demonstrations.

Note: Students must be participating in the American Chemical Society Post-Baccalaureate Bridge Program (ACS-BP)  to enroll in this course.
