MTLM 5600 - The Mathematics of the Elementary Curriculum

Pre/Corequisite(s): MTLM 5100

This course approaches mathematical concepts in the elementary curriculum (with a focus on number and operations) from an advanced perspective. By examining video and written cases, and artifacts ofchildren doing mathematics, students in this course will (1) connect their developing understanding ofmathematics to the important mathematical concepts they will be required to teach; (2) tum their attention from understanding their own mathematical thinking, and the thinking of their classmates, to understanding and assessing the mathematical thinking ofchildren; (3) lay the foundation for being able to leam mathematics from teaching. In addition, students will delve into the mathematics education literature that informs decisions about teaching and leaming mathematics with understanding.
