Majors with Secondary Education Licensure
The Secondary Education Program offers professional preparation for teaching and education-related careers in collaboration with the Educational Technology, and Special Education Programs and various academic major departments. This program prepares candidates to apply to the Colorado Department of Education for initial teacher licensure to teach in secondary schools (7-12 grades) with endorsements in: English, Mathematics, Modern Languages (French, Spanish, German) Science (Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science), or Social Studies (African and African American Studies, Behavioral Science, Chicano/a Studies, Economics, History, and Political Science)

All secondary candidates must consult two advisors, one in secondary education and one in their major (i.e. content) area. Secondary education candidates seeking teacher licensure in English, Math, or Modern Languages major must meet with an advisor in those specific academic areas. Secondary education candidates seeking Science or Social Studies must choose an approved academic major (Biology, Chemistry, or Environmental Science) or (African and African American Studies, Behavioral Science, Chicano Studies, Economics, History, or Political Science). Post-Baccalaureate candidates may receive approval for a major in a closely related field.
The following general studies courses fulfill the general course requirements for Metro State and the Teacher Education Program for degree-seeking candidates. Post-baccalaureate candidates need to fulfill some general studies requirements and may need additional content area course. The following courses fulfill a licensure candidate’s education courses for state licensure including the requirements for a minor required for the bachelor’s degree. All secondary licensure candidates must take methods of teaching in the content area, in addition to these licensure requirements. These are listed in the major for English, Math, Science, and Modern Languages, and below for all Social Sciences. This program is currently in transition. Some courses may no longer be available. Please see an advisor in Teacher Education prior to registering for classes. Notes:

*EDS 3110 and EDS 3200 (6 hours total) can be counted as General Studies courses in Social Science, but will require substitutions in the minor if the total credits in the minor falls below 18 credits. See an education advisor to see if this applies in your program.
**Mathematics Secondary Licensure Course Exception:
Math candidates take MTL 4690 Student Teaching and Seminar: Secondary 7-12 instead of EDS 4290 (12 credits). Additional required licensure courses found in the mathematics major.

History and Behavioral Science Secondary Licensure meet this requirement in their major, the other Licensure sections (African American Studies, Chicano Studies, Economics, and Political Science) it is an additional course under the Licensure requirements. Majors with Secondary Education Licensure:
The following major advising guides are prepared to assist candidates in choosing an appropriate major for Secondary Education. Candidates must choose a major from the following selections in order to fulfill licensure requirements for Metro State and the state of Colorado. The advising guides are not substitutes for meeting with academic advisors. Licensure candidates must consult an advisor in their selected major and one in education. To better support candidates in their major selections, eightsemester planned sequences for each of the licensure majors can be obtained inside the Teacher Application Center in West Classroom, Room 136.
Candidates seeking teacher licensure must also gain admission to the Teacher Education Program. The application form for the program must be completed by attending an Application Meeting scheduled through the Teacher Application Center (WC 136). Formal admission must be obtained BEFORE Level II education coursework can be taken. Refer to the admission section for Teacher Education of this catalog for more information about Provisional and Formal Admission. Secondary English Licensure:
The secondary education concentration in English, offered in conjunction with the licensure program, prepares degree seeking, future secondary teachers of English to understand and teach the diverse subject matter required for licensure. This program equips students with a wide variety of language principles and skills; practical experience in developing and teaching the processes of writing; sound knowledge of approaches to literature and literary genres; periods and authors (including a special focus on young adult literature); and an understanding of communication and media as used in English studies. In addition to meeting specified state and departmental requirements, this program offers students the opportunity to develop further specialization in writing, language, or literature to complement the major. The major provides student with a background in the Colorado K-12 Model Content Standards for English and prepares them to pass the required content exam for licensure. Mathematics Major with Secondary Mathematics Licensure:
The Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences offers a major in Mathematical Sciences with a concentration in Mathematics Education. The goals of this program are to provide degree seeking candidates with: (1)broad-based and coherent preparation in the various disciplines that constitute the mathematical sciences and; (2)the pedagogical knowledge of mathematics needed to begin a career as a middle or high school mathematics teacher. This concentration also prepares candidates for continued study of the mathematical sciences at the graduate level. Candidates are required to meet with one or more of the faculty advisors in the area of mathematics education as well as a teacher licensure advisor as they plan their academic program. The mathematics major with Mathematics education concentration requires completion of the courses listed below, and satisfaction of the minimum grade and currency requirements stated below. Any of the courses required for the major that were taken more than ten years ago will need to be repeated unless you can demonstrate current knowledge of the concepts of the course. Degree seeking candidates who wish to obtain Colorado licensure for Secondary Foreign Language must earn a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Modern Languages. Candidates must complete 42 hours in their language concentration (French, German, or Spanish). Alternately, candidates may choose to complete 42 hours in a primary language and take an additional 18 hours at the 2000 level or above in a different secondary language for a total of 60 hours. The curriculum focuses on the Colorado Model Content Standards for Foreign Languages and prepare licensure candidates to pass the required content test. Option I for French Concentration:

Biology Major with Secondary Science Licensure:
Candidates who wish to obtain Colorado licensure for Secondary Science Education with a major in Biology must earn a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree. Included in the requirements for the Biology major with a concentration in Secondary Science teaching is a core curriculum designed to ensure that the Biology education program meets the Colorado Science Licensure Standards and addresses the objectives of the Science content area examination. The core curriculum adds a firm foundation in Physics, Chemistry, Earth-Space Science, Environmental Science, and Mathematics. Behavioral Science Major with Secondary Social Studies Licensure:
This is a distributed major, offering students a structured overview of the social sciences (Anthropology, Economics, History, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology.) This program emphasizes breadth of coverage with a focus in an area selected by the student. This major is particularly applicable for students interested in teacher licensure at the elementary and secondary level. A special emphasis will be placed on history. The program addresses the Colorado Model Content Standards in Social Studies and prepares licensure candidates to pass the required content exam.

Chicano Studies Major with Secondary Social Studies Licensure
The Chicana/o Studies Department offers this concentration which prepares students to become social studies teachers in secondary schools. The requirements include core courses in Chicano Studies, a sequence in history and additional courses in social studies. The Secondary Education Concentration is intended for individuals who are in the Secondary Education Social Studies Licensure Program. These individuals are required to take other specific courses listed under Teacher Education in this Catalog. In addition to:
The core courses (15 hours) students also need to take the three courses listed in Category I (9 hours), at least two courses (6 hours) from Category II, and at least two courses (6 hours) from Category III. Political Science Major with Secondary Social Studies Licensure:
Degree seeking students who wish to obtain Colorado Licensure for Secondary Social Studies with a major in Political Science must earn a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree.
