Music Major, B.M.


A grade of C- or better is required for each course in this program to count toward the bachelor’s degree. Students should note that programs differ in the minimum grade required.

**Students whose primary instrument is piano must substitute MUS 261C and 262C, Advanced Keyboard Skills I and II, for MUS 161B and 162B, Class Piano I and II, in the core requirements listed above.

*This course may be repeated for credit. Students majoring in music performance must enroll in the major ensemble in their concentration during each semester of full-time residence (enrollment in 12 or more credit hours) and must complete the requirement with a grade of “C” or better in order to be eligible to continue to enroll in individual instruction.  Additionally, students are encouraged to enroll in a variety of ensembles outside of their major area of study. At least two credit hours of ensembles must be chamber ensembles.

The major ensemble in the piano or organ concentration is choir, band, or orchestra (as assigned by the Director of Choral Activities, Director of Band Activities, or Director of Orchestral Activities), except for two semesters during their junior or senior year, in which they must take MUS 381L, Collaborative Piano.

The major ensemble in the guitar concentration is Guitar Ensemble.

The major ensemble in the woodwinds, brass, or percussion concentration is band (Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, or Concert Band), as assigned by the Director of Band Activities.

The major ensemble in the strings concentration is Orchestra, as assigned by the Director of Orchestral Activities.
