Music Major, B.M.

The Bachelor of Music degree prepares students for further graduate studies or for careers as performers, composers, or private studio teachers. Concentrations are available in performance and composition. To be admitted to this program, students must demonstrate the capability of developing a high level of musicianship. For admission to the performance concentration, students must pass the music performance audition upon completion of MUS 1720 - Private Instruction II . For admission to the composition concentration, students must pass a review of their composition portfolio upon completion of MUS 3650 - Basic Techniques of Composition .

A grade of “C-” or better is required for each course in this program to count toward the Bachelor’s degree. Students should note that programs differ in the minimum grade required. The Bachelor of Music does not require a minor.

Select two credit hours from one of the following areas:*

    *Students electing the organ concentration must take MUS 161A and MUS 162A (Class Voice I and II) or MUS 171A (Private Voice I). Students enrolling in MUS 1710 must concurrently enroll in MUS 0020, Recital Attendance, and the major ensemble for the lesson area.

    **Students may fulfill this requirement with Private Jazz Instruction or on the same instrument.

Students must complete 12 credits of ensembles.

Piano Concentration

Eight hours:

Students must enroll in Chamber Music. Students must complete the requirement with a grade of “C- ” or better in order to be eligible to continue to enroll in individual instruction.

Four hours:

Students must enroll in Symphonic Band, Secondary Instrument Band, Wind Ensemble (audition), String Sinfonietta, Symphony Orchestra (audition), Chorale (mixed choir, audition), Women’s Chamber Choir (audition), Women’s Choir, or Men’s Choir.

Organ Concentration

Eight hours:

Students must enroll in Chamber Music. students must complete the requirement with a grade of “C-” or better in order to be eligible to continutrTo-linroll in individual instruction.

Four hours:

Students must enroll in Symphonic Band, Secondary Instrument Band, Wind Ensemble (audition), String Sinfonietta, Symphony Orchestra (audition), Chorale (mixed choir, audition), Women’s Chamber Choir (audition), Women’s Choir, or Men’s Choir.

Guitar Concentration

Students must enroll in Guitar Ensemble. Students must complete the requirement with a grade of “C-” or better in order to be eligible to continue to enroll in individual instruction.

Four hours:

Students must enroll in Chamber Music.

Woodwind, Brass, and Percussion Concentration

Six hours:

The major ensemble in the woodwinds, brass, or percussion concentration is band (Wind Ensemble (audition) or Symphonic Band), as assigned by the Director of Band Activities. Students must complete the requirement with a grade of “C-” or better in order to be eligible to continue to enroll in individual instruction.

Two hours:

Students must enroll in Symphony Orchestra. Students must complete the requirement with a grade of “C- ” or better in order to be eligible to continue to enroll in individual instruction.

Four hours:

Students must enroll in Chamber Music.

Strings Concentration

Eight hours:

The major ensemble in the strings concentration is Symphony Orchestra (auditon) or String Sirifonietta, as assigned by the Direcior of Orchestral Activities. Students must complete the requirement with a grade of “C-” or better in order to be eligible to continue to enroll in individual instruction.

Four hours:

Students must enroll in Chamber Music.

Three hours:

Students must enroll in Chamber Music or Opera.

One hour:

Students must enroll in Chamber Music, Opera, or Early Music Ensemble.

Voice Performance Concentration: 13 credits

Twelve hours:

Students must enroll in Jazz Ensemble (audition) or Jazz Combos (audition) as assigned by the Direcror of Jazz Studies during each semester of full-time residence (enrollment in 12 or more credit hours), and students must complete the requirement with a grade of “C-” or better to be eligible to continue to enroll in individual instruction. At least two credits of ensembles must be chamber ensembles.

Students must enroll in Wind Ensemble (audition), Symphonic Band, or Secondary Instrument Band.

Students must enroll in Symphony Orchestra (audition) or String Sinfonietta.

One hour:

Students must enroll in Chorale (mixed, audition), Women’s Chamber Ensemble (audition), Women’s Choir, or Men’s Choir.

One hour:

Students must enroll in Chamber Music.
