SWK 1600 - Community Engagement and Civic Responsibility

Description: This course focuses on providing a community oriented, service- learning and civic engagement experience from a social work perspective. In this course students will provide at least 30 hours of services to a community organization to enhance their academic and civic learning and complete a final project demonstrating their knowledge of social problems related to their service-learning site. Students will be introduced to the role of student learner within an agency context prior to beginning the service learning experience. Students will reflect on social justice issues, understand socioeconomic and political factors that affect their communities and apply their reflection and learning to their personal and professional development.
Note: Some sections of this course may be taught as Service Learning.
