African and African American Studies

The African and African American Studies Department offers a range of courses in African and African American Studies that present the dimension of the black experience in this country and in Africa. These courses encompass and afford a comprehensive understanding of the African heritage. They present African links and potential; contributions of black people in the growth and development of the United States; black culture and lifestyles; the black community; political activity and potential; religious development and importance; community service and resource assistance; and prognosis and potential for social change. Some courses may apply in the General Studies requirements and as electives for graduation. Students seeking secondary education licensure with a social studies endorsement must satisfy the teacher education program of MSCD in addition to all of the major requirements.

The major in African American Studies, which leads to a bachelor of arts degree, and the minor program must be planned in consultation with the chair of the African and African American Studies Department. Before declaring African American Studies as a major, the student must consult with the African and African American Studies Department chair. Students seeking secondary education licensure must consult with an advisor in African and African American Studies and one in Secondary Education.

Assessment Test

During the final semester, students majoring in African American Studies will be required to take a comprehensive assessment test.
