Technical Communication Major, B.S.

Technical Communication Core


All technical communication majors are required to complete the following courses:

Interactive Media Production Concentration


The Interactive Media Production Concentration provides the student with the theory, production and programming practices of interactive media production. The course work includes the writing, editing, designing, and authoring of interactive projects in addition to professional experience and hands-on practice with computer hardware and software. Such productions are frequently used for education, training, marketing, public relations, and sales purposes.

Mobile and Social Media Concentration


This communication concentration area prepares students for a career in the design and development of mobile and social media communication within professional communities and networks. Social media environments are strategically designed to foster communication and sustain community engagement for problem solving, idea generation, professional development, and other corporate communication contexts. In addition to a required core of coursework, students must take the required concentration courses. Students may choose 9 credits of COM electives from the approved list or meet with an advisor to determine other elective options.

Video Production Concentration


The Video Production concentration provides the student with the theoretical and practical experience required to design, write, edit, and produce video programs for use in industry, government, corporations, cable television, and other organizations. Such productions are frequently used for training, image creation, promotional, motivational, narrowcasting, and sales purposes.

Technical Writing and Editing Concentration


The Technical Writing and Editing Concentration provides the student with both the theory and production practices of technical writing and editing used by industry and government. It includes course work in the writing, editing, design, and production of technical reports, proposals, and manuals in addition to professional experience and hands-on practices with computer hardware and software. The curriculum is designed to provide breadth of knowledge and multi-task capability.

Extended Major


To complete either of the extended major options, the student must fulfill all the requirements specified in one of the technical communication concentrations. In addition, the student must fulfill all General Studies and Multicultural requirements of Metropolitan State University of Denver. Students enrolled in the extended major are NOT required to complete a minor.

An extended major must complete at least 15 credits of electives.
