Professional Certificate in Medical Laboratory Science

The post-baccalaureate one-year certificate in Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) offered by CCMLS is a nationally recognized program leading to eligibility to sit for MLS(ASCP) professional certification through the American Society for Clinical Pathology.  Certification in Medical Laboratory Science allows individuals to practice in the nation’s clinical laboratories most of which are in hospitals, medical clinics, or reference laboratories.  The MLS profession is a high demand profession which is projected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics to grow by 11% over the next decade.

Lecture and laboratory curriculum is taught by faculty who are certified medical laboratory scientists.  Coursework prepares students to enter a series of clinical courses during the spring semester.  Clinical coursework takes place within the healthcare community in the program’s clinical partner laboratories.

Prerequisite Coursework

  • Minimum 16 semester hours of biological sciences including immunology and microbiology; pathogenic or medical microbiology with laboratory strongly recommended.
  • Minimum 16 semester hours of chemistry including coursework in organic and/or biochemistry.
  • College level mathematics; a course in statistics is recommended.
