To comply with Title IV regulations for federal financial aid, MSU Denver must determine if a student earned and maintained eligibility for their financial aid funds. Financial aid eligibility is determined based on a student’s participation in an academically related activity during the first two weeks of full-term courses.
On the Census Date for all terms and parts of term, Faculty will be required to indicate if a student failed to begin participation in the course. For shorter-term courses such as those in Winterim, Maymester, or five- and eight-week parts of term participation data will be collected on the applicable published Census Date, which may be less than two weeks from the course’s start date.
Participation means that a student engages in an academically related activity. For the purposes of Mandatory Participation Verification (MPV), participation will be defined according to the university’s last date of attendance or participation policy.
This definition may be different from the criteria used to assess participation in a course’s grading policy; faculty members determine grading criteria for their courses. Not all courses include attendance and/or participation as a distinct academic standard for evaluation. If attendance and/or participation are part of a course’s grading policy, the course-specific definition will be provided or linked in the syllabus or learning management systems materials.
When a faculty member reports for MPV purposes that a student has not participation, the student will be administratively dropped by the Registrar’s Office from the course. Financial Aid will be prorated or canceled. This may require the student to repay all or a portion of the financial aid already released to them. The student will no longer appear on the class roster.
Students who demonstrate that they did participate in an academically related activity and were inadvertently dropped, have the option to request reinstatement into the course(s) with instructor(s) permission.
Note: an administrative drop from a course or courses may also impact eligibility for other programs such as Veterans Education Benefits, students attending MSU Denver on F-1 Visa, etc.
Participation will be defined by the Faculty and will be listed in the syllabus for each course.
Per federal guidelines, faculty and students are encouraged to consult the latest federal definitions for Last Date of Attendance or Participation to establish a clear understanding of participation requirements.
Grades and Last Date of Participation
When submitting final grades, for any students receiving a failing grade (F grade), Faculty will be required to indicate if the student completed the class, did not attend at all, or has not participated in an academically related activity since a specific date. For students who have not participated in an academically related activity since a specific date, entry of a last date of participation will be required.
