EDS 3130 - Democratic Foundations of Education, Schooling, and Learning
Credits: 3
Prerequisite(s): ENG 1009 or ENG 1010; At least sophomore status; Formal or Provisional Admission to the School of Education
Corequisite(s): EDS 3170
Description: Teacher candidates will explore history, culture, sociology, politics, and educational philosophy as they apply to education, schooling, and learning. Candidates will investigate five primary questions: 1) What is the purpose of school? 2) What are the roles of a teacher? 3) What systems shape classrooms, school communities, and the teaching profession as a democratic endeavor? 4) How do individuals and communities influence education, schooling, and learning? 5) How does community culture influence schooling? Teacher candidates will demonstrate their understanding of these essential questions by developing their educational philosophy throughout the course. This course requires concurrent enrollment in EDS 3170 , which includes an embedded 45 hour field experience in a MSU Denver Secondary Education Field Partner School.
