GEG 2700 - Geographies of Environmental Justice

Credits: 3

Description: Students examine the intersection of environmental issues and social inequality in the United States. They analyze how communities of color and low-income populations experience disproportionate exposure to environmental hazards and have limited access to environmental benefits and decision-making processes. Students analyze the geographic distribution and spatial patterns of environmental inequalities, including exposure to pollution, waste, contaminated land, climate change, and access to green space. They investigate the historical roots of environmental racism and assess how place-based policies and planning have shaped environmental outcomes. They use geographic tools such as mapping, spatial analysis, and community-based research to explore how location and place influences both harm and resistance. Case studies focus on grassroots movements and advocacy efforts aimed at achieving environmental justice and healthier communities.
