AAS 3010 - Advanced Research Methods in Africana Studies
Credits: 3
Prerequisite(s): AAS 2010 OR instructor approval
Description: This advanced seminar provides students with in-depth training in a single methodological approach relevant to the study of African-descended peoples and communities across the diaspora. Each semester, the course centers on a distinct method-such as ethnography, oral history, archival research, literary analysis, or quantitative social science-allowing students to explore its theoretical foundations, practical applications, and ethical considerations within Africana Studies. Students will critically examine how the selected method can be used to challenge dominant narratives, highlight marginalized voices, and investigate systems of race, power, and resistance. Through focused readings, case studies, and an independent research project, students will develop expertise in applying Africana-centered methodology to issues of historical and contemporary relevance.
Note: Course may be repeated for a total of 6 credits.
