Department of Hospitality, Tourism and Events


The mission of the Department of Hospitality, Tourism and Events is to provide demonstrated leadership and excellence in its baccalaureate, professional and technical programs and to render service to the students, citizens and hospitality industry of the State of Colorado. The Department of Hospitality, Tourism and Events provides flexible and individualized interdisciplinary major programs with concentrations to include hotel, restaurant, tourism and events management.

Departmental Goals

The goals of the department are to:

  • Provide instruction and professional assistance to students.
  • Assist students in the development of professionalism and an attitude of continued professional growth and individual development.
  • Assist students to recognize their responsibilities as members of the hospitality industry and society.
  • Prepare students for graduate study in Hospitality, Tourism and Events and related fields.
  • Provide seminars and workshops for the hospitality industry within Colorado and beyond.
  • Conduct applied research in the field of hospitality.
  • Increase the quality and accessibility of hospitality education to citizens of Colorado and beyond.
  • Provide professional assistance to the hospitality industry and citizens of Colorado.

Bachelor of Arts in Hospitality, Tourism and Events

Students seeking a Bachelor of Arts degree in Hospitality, Tourism and Events have four concentration options:

The Hotel Management Concentration prepares students for operations and management positions in various segments of the hotel, motel, lodging and resort industries.

The Restaurant Management Concentration prepares students for operations and management positions in commercial and institutional food service areas such as restaurants, clubs, culinary administration, hotels, resorts, schools, colleges, health care, business and industry in plant feeding and catering.

The Tourism Management Concentration prepares students for planning, operating, managing, selling, and marketing tourism projects with tour operators, destination management companies, adventure travel businesses, ecotourism companies, cruise lines, volunteer services, convention and visitor bureaus, and sustainability organizations.

The Events Management Concentration prepares students for planning an event, meeting, conference, convention, special events, and trade show for both corporate and nonprofit organizations.

Minors

The department offers five minors:

These minors are open to students at MSU Denver majoring in a field of study other than Hospitality, Tourism and Events. The minors provide specialized knowledge on the application of business and management principles specific to the area of concentration.

Certificate Programs

The Department of Hospitality, Tourism and Events offers five certificate programs, specifically designed to help students gain the skills and practices necessary to support career changes into the hospitality profession.

Requirements

Students must be accepted to the University and take courses for credit. The cost of the program is the same as undergraduate tuition for degree-seeking students. Since the student is a full-time matriculated student for academic credit, additional financial aid and scholarships may apply. The credits achieved may also be applied to an additional bachelor’s degree if the student elects to major in one of the departmental concentrations of study. Students with similar courses in their prior experience may request courses be transferred to meet part of the certificate requirements.

Certificate Program Requirements

  • Review certificate program plan with advisor prior to enrollment
  • Maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.00
