The mission of the Nursing Department is to provide a high-quality, accessible, enriching education, leading to a baccalaureate degree in nursing.

Programs

The Nursing Department offers a baccalaureate degree program with two tracks leading to a major in nursing, the Accelerated Nursing Option (ANO) and the Baccalaureate Registered Nurse Completion Option (BRNCO).

Student Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the Metropolitan State College of Denver Nursing Program, graduates should be able to:

1. Demonstrate core competencies through:

  • application of the nursing process while caring for individuals, families, and communities throughout the lifespan
  • utilization of effective communication skills
  • use of critical thinking skills
  • performance of technical skills

2. Demonstrate core knowledge through:

  • knowledge of illness and disease prevention
  • application of evidence based practice
  • knowledge of diverse cultures, perspectives, and belief systems
  • identification of social, financial, regulatory, and healthcare policy trends
  • utilization of appropriate technologies and strategies to influence health
  • application of safe patient care
  • practice of interprofessional communication and collaboration for improving patient health outcomes

3. Demonstrate role development through:

  • ethical, legal, safe, and socially responsible practice in the roles of provider of care, manager of care, and member of the profession
  • application of leadership and management principles as a member of the diverse, multidisciplinary health care team
  • integration of professionalism and professional value

Accelerated Nursing Option (ANO)

The ANO is a second degree program for students with a previous non-nursing baccalaureate degree. 

Students who wish to enter the ANO must apply to the College and to the nursing program. Information on admissions requirements and the application process is available through the Department of Nursing, in the Administration Building, Suite 220, 303-556-4391, or online at: www.mscd.edu/~nursing

Baccalaureate Registered Nurse Completion Option (BRNCO)

The BRNCO is available to RNs with an associate degree or diploma in nursing.  Thirty semester hours of lower-division nursing credit will be awarded for prior nursing education to qualifying students.
